It Kept Him At Bay

He told me that it was my casual openess,
my lack of fear in the face of propriety,
my unwillingness to yield to others
and their staunch expectations of me.

How have I been tasked with this,
to bare a love for someone who doesn’t
understand
but never demands?
Someone who refuses to see,
believe,
or trust in the honesty of me.
But in that moment I saw myself
as the person I needed beside me,
to champion my choices in life;
to fill the well of which I freely give
my heart,
my mind,
my laughter,
my stories,
my time.
